Welcome to Garrett Jones Funeral Home
Welcome to Garrett Jones Funeral Home. As early as 1719 the town was known by the Indian name of Ahotskey, which was adopted by the white settlers. The English spelled the name in many ways after articulation of the unwritten Indian sound, and in 1894 with the coming of the railroad and the post office, the name was spelled Ahoskie. Ahoskie is nestled in northeastern North Carolina, centered between Norfolk, VA (to the north), Greenville, N.C. (to the south), the Outer Banks of N.C. (to the east) and Roanoke Rapids, N.C. (to the west). A friendly town, Ahoskie is the largest town in Hertford County and serves as the retail and medical center of the area. Our residents and visitors enjoy the recreation offered by the nearby Chowan River and miles of streams as well as the acres of forest land. Ahoskie offers a peaceful lifestyle in a bustling community.
Our History
History- Since 1931 we have been serving the Roanoke Chowan and surrounding areas. The funeral business was originated on the third floor of the Basnight-Garrett Furniture store on Main street in downtown Ahoskie . The funeral home was moved to Railroad Street and then to its current location in March of 1961. In 1944 the Garret Family bought out the Basnight family and Mr. Norvin Garrett took over the business in 1957 and worked until his retirement in 1991. Dick Ashley, a licensed funeral director and embalmer, moved to Ahoskie in December of 1966 and began his career at Garrett Funeral Home. He worked his way into a management position and became co-owner in 2007. In honor of Mr. Ashley’s longtime service to our community our funeral chapel was named in his honor. Chuck Jones, a licensed funeral director and embalmer for 25 years, moved to Ahoskie and became co-owner in 2007. The funeral home was corporately owned for a number of years, but is now locally owned and operated.
We are commited to serving our families with the pride and dignity that has been a tradition at Garrett Funeral Home.
We have added a second location in Rich Square. www.sykesfuneralservice.com/
